Scenic Nevada Selects 2007 Photo Contest Winners

Reno, NV, April 13, 2007 — Scenic Nevada has selected winning photographs in their 2007 Photo Contest “Beauty or Blight” for Nevada high school students and adults, according to Doug Smith, Chairman.

The purpose of the Scenic Nevada “2007 Photo Contest” for high school students and adults was to create an awareness of the importance of preserving, protecting and enhancing the scenic character of Nevada.

Judges of over 528 individual photographs from throughout Nevada were: Penny Roskoski, Chairperson, and Photographer; Marilyn Newton, Photographer and Author; Neal Cobb, Historian; Marilyn Naylor, Teacher; Jim McCormick, Professor of Art Emeritus; and Marilyn Melton, Artist.

Scenic Nevada winners of the overall Grand Prizes in the Scenic “Beauty” category and the Scenic “Blight” category, respectively, were: Julie Granata, Reno, NV, $150.00 (Pyramid Lake sunrise) and Clayton Sellers, Henderson, NV, $150.00 (desert environment photo).

Winners in the Scenic “Beauty” category were: 1st place, Veronica Perra, Gardnerville, NV, $100.00 (bottom photo of Foothill Road in Carson Valley); 2nd place, Brenda Bledsoe, Carson City, NV, $50.00; 3rd place, John Rasche, Reno, NV, McQueen High School, Mrs. Quinn, teacher, $25.00.

Winners in the Scenic “Blight’ category were: 1st place. Carol Corzo, Eldorado High School, Las Vegas, NV, Ms. Jensen, teacher, $100.00; 2nd place, Christy Rasmussen, Coronado High School, Henderson, NV, Ms. Pavesich, teacher, $50.00 and Lily Sims-Williams, McQueen High School, Reno, (Abandoned River Inn Mineral Spa in Lawton – second photo) NV, Mrs. Quinn, teacher, $25.00.

The Scenic Nevada 2007 Photo Contest “Beauty or Blight” for high school students and adults was sponsored by Nevada Office Machines and Scenic Nevada.

Pristine waterways and abandoned bathtubs and are among photography representing Nevada's beauty and blight and are scheduled to hang in Reno's Idlewild Park for the April 22 Earth Day celebration.

Scenic Nevada received 528 entries statewide for its annual photo contest, up from 325 in 2006. The contest was designed to create awareness of the importance of preserving, protecting and enhancing the state's scenic character.

The grand prize in the "beauty" category went to Julie Granata of Reno (Pyramid Lake Sunrise) and third place awards went to John Rasche in the "beauty" division and Lily Sims-Williams, also of Reno, in the "blight" division.

Granata said she took her photo one morning on Pyramid Lake's east shore then found out about later about the photo contest.

"It wasn't me wanting to take the picture, it was the picture calling out to me," Granata said. "I was camping in the morning, and the light was so beautiful."

Other winners and their categories were as follows: Clayton Sellers of Henderson, grand prize "blight;" Veronica Perra of Gardnerville, first place "beauty;" Carol Corzo of North Las Vegas, first place "blight;" Brenda Bledsoe of Carson City, second place "beauty" and Christy Rasmussen of Henderson, second place "blight."

About the 2007 Photo Contest — Each year Scenic Nevada and Nevada Office Machines sponsor a Photography Contest highlighting Nevada's scenic beauty and blight. We want to create an awareness of the importance of "preserving, protecting and enhancing the scenic character of Nevada and it's roadways". Deadline to Submit photos is April 1st, 2007.
